The Snip-Snip Program provides subsidised desexing for companion animals in the ACT and surrounding region. Desexing has many benefits including:
reduces the financial burden of unwanted pet pregnancies
desexing female dogs and cats reduces unwanted pregnancies that can result in thousands of unwanted puppies & kittens ending up in shelters. This in turn reduces the burden on rescues and shelters.
desexing improves the quality of life for pets and reduce the risk of diseases. Research indicates that desexed animals can live longer and have a better quality of life, as they are less likely to get diseases and certain illnesses such as mammary cancer, ovarian tumours and uterine infections in females, and testicular cancer and prostate problems in males.
desexing can also reduce behaviour problems such as roaming, aggression and urine marking in males
under ACT law, cats must be desexed if they are over 3 months old and dogs when they are over 6 months old.
